The purpose of the Language Arts program at Immanuel Lutheran School is to encourage students to use the skill of communication through God's gifts of reading, writing, and speaking to the best of his/her God-given ability. We believe that all curricular areas are encompassed by language in the form of reading, speaking, and writing, making language basic to the teaching of all subjects. We believe reading is essential to a strong foundation in all areas of learning in order for students to collect, assess, and construct meaning from written material to establish a connection between their world and God. We accept the process of writing to include pre-writing, writing a draft, rewriting, revising, preparing the final copy, and publishing a final copy. We recognize that students need the opportunity to develop both their formal and informal speaking skills. We belive that language arts skills can be improved through grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and handwriting exercises. ILS believes that an understanding and application of God's Word should be integrated into the teaching of language arts.

As the most important subject in our Christian Day School, religion impacts the daily life of students, throughout student's life here on earth, and affects student's eternal welfare. We believe religion instruction must be integrated into the entire curriculum so that all subjects are approached from a Christian perspective. Students must be instructed so that they are able to apply their Christian faith to their everyday problems and decisions, learning to live in obedience to the faith. We believe that an essential part of teaching the faith is communicating the values that grow out of faith. Students will learn to witness to other about their faith as Christians by having the skill of memory of portions of Scripture, hymnody, and the catechism as their disposal.

The Spanish program is an exploration of conversational Spanish. The program is video-based curriculum out of the University of Northern Arizona.
The program was created with a two-year alternating curriculum where two grades are combined and both grades are studying the same content in any given school year. One year is Units 1-5 and the alternating year is Units 6-10. The curriculum is designed to facilitate student entrance at the beginning of either year of the curriculum. The first year of instruction assumes that there are both continuing students and entering students, so we work on reviewing as well as introducing a common base of knowledge for that year's instructional themes. The rest of the year's instruction builds on that initial unit. The entire curriculum is spiraled for both foreign language elements and thematic content throughout the six years of programs.
